Our Funding Focus: Biodiversity, Climate Resilience, and Community Wellbeing

Chakwetu Trust strategically supports a wide range of initiatives in Tanzania:

  • Conserving Biodiversity: Protecting critical habitats and endangered species unique to Tanzania.
  • Building Climate Resilience: Empowering communities to adapt to climate impacts with sustainable, nature-based solutions.
  • Supporting Sustainable Livelihoods: Encouraging economic growth that aligns with environmental stewardship, particularly in vulnerable communities.
  • Advancing Environmental Awareness and Research: Promoting education, policy guidance, and innovative solutions for biodiversity and climate resilience.

From the Trust Deed

  • to assist in relieving distress to the public resulting from impacts on biodiversity and the natural environment from economic activities, climate change, population pressure and similar challenges;
  • to provide long-term sustainable funding for activities which preserve biodiversity, mitigate and offset the environmental effects of industrial and economic development, and support the sustainable management of natural resources, protected areas and areas of high biodiversity;
  • to assist communities, land managers and the Government of Tanzania in implementing nature-based solutions to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change and related threats;
    to provide support for livelihoods and efforts to reduce poverty compatible with the preservation of biodiversity and sustainable natural resource management;
  • to raise awareness to the general public, policy and decision-makers on the importance of preserving biodiversity, the value of protected areas and innovative solutions to potential threats, and to fund research which supports the Trust’s initiatives in these areas; and
  • to assist the Government of Tanzania in implementing its national biodiversity and climate strategies and meeting its regional and international commitments with respect to biodiversity, climate and related objectives.
