Governance

Chakwetu is a trust under Tanzanian trust law, legally incorporated under the Trustees Incorporation Act (Cap 318 R.E. 2002) as “The Registered Trustees of the Tanzania Environmental Sustainability Trust” with certificate number T620241410006 (March 2024).  The Trustees consist of distinguished individuals from civil society, academia, the private sector and government, between seven (7) and nine (9) in number, a majority of whom will always be Tanzanian citizens.  The Trustees comprise the Board of Directors.  As a Board they approve the Trust’s strategic direction, its annual and long-term plans, its policies and procedures and its major grants.  The Board meets at minimum four (4) times a year, including its Annual Meeting.    The Board has established an Audit Committee  to ensure the integrity of the Trust’s finances and commission an annual independent external audits.    Day-to-day operations of the Trust are entrusted to the Chief Executive Officer who oversees the Trust’s Secretariat.

Their collective experience ensures strategic oversight and informed decision-making that aligns with our mission to protect biodiversity and promote sustainable development. With backgrounds in environmental policy, natural resource management, and institutional leadership, the board plays a vital role in guiding our long-term vision and ensuring accountability across all areas of our work.
